Biography
My family migrated to the United States after a difficult period in their homeland of Cuba. I was born in 1964 in Georgia but my family re-settled in Miami. My earliest memories are of the colorful and rich ex-patriot cuban community in South Florida. I grew of age there and eventually received a degree in Communication Design and for ten years worked in the Advertising Industry. In the late 1990's I had become an Art Director for a Miami Firm living a fast paced life. A turn of events changed the path I was on. At the age of 32 I picked up a brush and began to teach myself to paint. Had it not been for this experience I may never have discovered my passion for paint and the human form.
Artist Statement
I have had to be without so much for so long my appreciation for the subtle nuances of human communication have become my currency. I am enamored particularly with the female form. A woman's glance, a gesture but always her fragile form. I try to deconstruct mere shapes and reconstruct them into poses that exude dreamlike purity. Each of my works is an attempt to communicate passion with love, sensuality with trust and above all inner spirituality. As a portraitist my job is to tell the truth, but every subject is an archetype framed with the tragedy and triumphs of life. I see the execution of my craft as part of the continuum of the master's attempt to reveal the soul of the subjects being painted. Each piece I paint is a visual elixir for me and I hope for all those who view it.
