This was painted from a picture of my friend’s daughter.
I love the expression the she had as the picture was taken.
That was my inspiration for painting this one.

This is my nephew Taylor. I painted him using the “Zorn Palette”, which is a very limited palette.

It consist of white, black, yellow ochre, and cad. red.

It took me about three hours and was done from a photograph.

It’s 18″ x 14″ oil on canvas.

On this porrait I used a different approach.  I used the verdaccio method.
I started by doing an underpainting using flake white, ivory black and chromium oxide.
Followed by transparent glazes.  The result is a more realistic finish.

Here is an alla prima portrait sketch that I did in December of 09.
I spent about two and a half hours on this one.  It was a great learning experience.
Actually, every painting I complete is a learning experience for me.
And I enjoy every moment.

This is a 2 hour limited palette study that I’m working on.
I plan to work on it just a bit more this weekend and them
I’ll post the finished work.
I’ve been learning so much with so few colors.

As promised, he is the finished portrait sketch.

As promised,  here is a portrait painted from life.
I have to admit the it’s much harder that from a picture.
It moves!  Imagine that.  I have some more that I’m working on
that I’ll soon be posting.

This is the cousin of a good friend of mine.
I drew it from a picture that was taken a long time ago.

Here is another portrait sketch that I recently completed.
I was once again working from a very limited palette similar to the previous one.
This was accomplished in about three hours form a photograph.
I’ve started a few from life that I will try to post as soon as I take good pictures.
